Blog Post One - Why I became a celebrant.
For around 15 years, I worked in secondary schools teaching philosophy & ethics to 11-18 year olds, so I spent years in discussion about human beings and their beliefs and behaviours. Human relationships was a particular area of interest of mine - the reasons humans choose to mark their loving relationships in a range of ways such as celebrating the safe arrival of a baby, marking a partnership with public declarations and promises, and gathering at the end of someone’s life to show respect and to seek comfort.
After leaving the classroom, I missed the creative writing and planning involved in generating resources for learning. I also missed the discussions about what people thought on topics and the reasons they put forward for these. With years of experience of public speaking, I wanted to find a new career that would incorporate all these areas of interest and experience.
I thought about becoming a celebrant for about 5 years before finally taking the plunge and striking out to build a business of my own. I trained with The Celebrant Collective as they have a good focus on inclusivity and creativity as well as providing ongoing professional development and a professional network. I then went part time to give myself the time to build up my new work and here I am, online and loving what I do!
If you are looking for a celebrant for yourself, consider their story, their interests and how you think they will fit with you. You will want to work with someone who understands you and will build a relationship with you to ensure your event runs just as you want it to run. If you think that may be me, then please contact me through my contact page or directly through my email/social media - I promise to be a committed and supportive celebrant.
